Presentation

Producing Architecture has many formats today. It has been traditionally focused on the responsibilities of projecting and building but, nowadays, it is combined within a multiplicity of possibilities among which are the development of analytical, descriptive and mediating strategies of reality that are imbricated into the matter of the architectonic project from very different and sometimes unknown viewpoints.

Coinciding with the reconsideration of Modernity´s traditional paradigms fed by the crisis, Architecture is facing its inevitable mediation role between the citizen´s space-times and the environments they inhabit.Opposite to the world of architectural professionalization within built environments, Society demands specialists capable of assuming the necessity of interconnecting different worlds from a complex knowledge that links systems of mediation, negotiation and communication where the profiles of action arise from a transversal knowledge.

The origin of the official Graduate studies in Architectural Communication responds this aim; it provides a specific training on communicational phenomena within the framework of architecture, from its humanistic, sociological and scientific dimensions as well as its technological, experimental and innovative characteristics.

Communication, as defined in current theories, is understood as a process of social interaction in which the behaviour of a human being acts as the stimulus to another human being conduct. It is precisely this bi-dimensional character of communication, opposite to the traditional unidirectional expression in architecture, demands the interaction between architects and other disciplines that produce the environments that society inhabits: a management of information that implies the elaboration of shared codes in free processes and susceptible responses where the different communicative formats exist today.

MACA, official Master in Architectural Communication from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, promoted by Hypermedia research group, is born out of the response to a conjecture of specialization in a field of knowledge not investigated in architectural environments and in a professional cross-practice generated by the information revolution in society. In this regard, the program develops a hyper-mediated space-time as a scope to host, boost, and structure people’s activities through text, image, video, audio, and any other support that allows the generation of knowledge across processes of social interaction within the architectonic activity.

MACA, today unique master under this profile, connects student’s research projects from every level with a complete research program within the new line of Architectonic Communication of Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid. It is associated to subjects from graduate courses, undergraduate final projects or professional masters and will be the preferential access to the new PhD Program in Architectonic Communication as guarantee and control of a specific research training, although it has a high diversity character due to its interdisciplinary approach.
